unarmed, perennial herb. Leaves radical, spreading, oblong-spathulate,
chartaceous, dark green above, paler below, margin irregularly lobed or
undulate; petiole to 15 cm. Capitulum solitary, red, homogamous, radiate,
campanulate; peduncle to 4.5 cm. Phyllaries 2-3-seriate , lanceolate.
Receptacle flat, naked. Outer florets sometimes only pistillate, inner ones
bisexual. Fruit is Achenes. Pappus cream.
